Hilton Head Island South Carolina

If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable Lowcountry event, the Hilton Head Island Lantern Parade is one of those magical celebrations that brings together art, community, and coastal beauty. My family and I spent the evening there last night, and it was everything you’d hope for — glowing lanterns drifting along the shoreline, kids laughing, and a warm island breeze sweeping across the beach. Watching my kid’s excitement with every sea-turtle, jellyfish, and dolphin lantern made the night even more special.

Whether you're a local or planning your next visit, this is an annual tradition you don’t want to miss.

The History Behind Hilton Head’s Lantern Parade

The Lantern Parade is a fairly new tradition, first introduced in 2019 by artist Chantelle Rytter, who is well-known for creating iconic community lantern parades across the Southeast. Her vision was simple but powerful: bring people together through creativity and light. Since then, Hilton Head Island has embraced it wholeheartedly.

Participants hand-craft their lanterns — from small glowing shapes to huge illuminated creatures carried by teams of volunteers. It’s a celebration of art, community, and the natural beauty of the Lowcountry, and every year it continues to grow.

Our Experience at the Parade

As soon as we stepped onto the beach, the evening transformed into something magical. Lanterns of every color floated through the night, the waves rolled in quietly beside us, and the entire beach glowed as families walked together in a long line of warm light.

For my kid, it was pure wonder — pointing at every lantern animal, asking questions, running in the sand, and soaking in every moment. This event brings out the inner child in everyone.

It’s both visually stunning and incredibly family-friendly.

A Hidden Travel Tip: The Best Time for Photos on Hilton Head Island

One of the amazing things about this event is its timing — the parade begins after sunset. That opens up a perfect opportunity earlier in the evening for visitors who want beautiful photos during the golden hour.

As a local photographer, I can confidently say that Hilton Head Island is one of the most beautiful places in the Lowcountry for photos, especially around sunset. The beaches are ideal for:

  • Family portraits
  • Maternity sessions
  • Small elopements & intimate engagements
  • Surprise proposals
  • Couples photography
  • Solo portraits or content sessions

Imagine this perfect timeline:

✨ You schedule a sunset photography session about one to two hours before the Lantern Parade.

✨ You enjoy the warm glow, soft waves, and stunning pastel skies during your photoshoot.

✨ Then, as the sun sets and your session wraps up, you finish your evening by walking straight into the Lantern Parade — glowing lanterns, music, and a magical night on the beach.

It’s truly one of the most unforgettable ways to spend a day on Hilton Head Island.
