Bluffton has a completely different feeling from Savannah or Tybee Island, and that is exactly what
makes it such a good place for an intimate wedding.
Here, the Lowcountry is the backdrop. You have the May River, salt marsh, old live oaks, historic
homes, small-town streets and quiet green spaces that feel more personal than a big traditional
wedding venue.
For an elopement, I think Bluffton works best when you lean into that. You do not need to turn the
day into a full wedding production. A simple ceremony under the trees or beside the river can be
enough, and Old Town gives us plenty of places to walk afterward for photographs.
One thing that is different from Savannah is that Bluffton does not have a long list of public
squares designed for ceremonies. Some of the strongest options are Town parks that require
reservations for organized events, while others are private venues where you will need to book
directly with the property. I actually like that mix because it gives couples options ranging from
extremely simple to fully private and weather-protected.
If you are trying to figure out where to elope in Bluffton, these are 12 locations I would seriously
consider.
1. Wright Family Park
Wright Family Park sits at the end of Calhoun Street near the May River and is one of the first
places I would look for a small Bluffton ceremony. The park has an open lawn, mature trees,
benches and walking paths, and it puts you right in the heart of Old Town.
From a photography standpoint, the location is especially strong because we do not have to stay in
one spot. After the ceremony, we can walk Calhoun Street, use the historic buildings and oak-
covered streets around Old Town, and work our way toward the river. The Town currently rents
the park for private events, but the park remains public even during a permitted event. Alcohol
and amplified music are prohibited here.
Best for: couples who want an intimate Old Town ceremony, May River atmosphere and an easy
walking portrait route afterward.
2. Oyster Factory Park
Oyster Factory Park is one of Bluffton's signature riverfront spaces. It sits along the May River near
the historic Bluffton Oyster Company and gives you water, marsh, live oaks and a very
recognizable Lowcountry setting in one place.
For photographs, this is one of the most versatile public locations in Bluffton. The river and marsh
can give us wide environmental images, while the trees and park paths work for closer portraits. I
would pay attention to the time of day and the tide because the riverfront can look very different
depending on both. The Town rents areas of the park for events, but a rental does not make the
public park exclusive to your group.
Best for: couples who want the May River to be a major part of the ceremony and photographs.
3. The Church of the Cross
The Church of the Cross is one of Bluffton's most recognizable historic landmarks. The present
church was consecrated in 1854 and sits at the end of Calhoun Street overlooking the May River
beneath large trees.
If a church ceremony is important to you, this is the location I would ask about first. It gives you a
traditional ceremony setting while still feeling unmistakably Bluffton. Because this is an active
church rather than a public wedding venue, ceremony availability, eligibility and church
requirements need to be confirmed directly with the parish before making plans. From a
photography standpoint, the grounds, historic exterior and nearby Old Town streets offer an
incredible amount of variety within walking distance.
Best for: couples who want a historic church ceremony with a strong connection to Old Town
Bluffton and the May River.
4. Heyward House
The Heyward House is one of the few surviving antebellum homes in Old Town Bluffton and today
serves as a museum and historic center. The Historic Bluffton Foundation specifically offers the
property for weddings and special events.
This is a strong option if you want history without needing a church ceremony. The house, porch,
lawn, old trees and surrounding Historic District give the day a small-town Southern feeling that is
very different from a beach or resort wedding. For photographs, we can use the property first and
then walk into Old Town for a second look without driving anywhere.
Best for: historic, intimate ceremonies and couples who want Old Town architecture to be part of
the story.
5. Colcock-Teel Oak Grove
The Historic Bluffton Foundation also rents the Oak Grove at the Colcock-Teel property for
weddings and special events. This is the kind of Bluffton setting that works when the trees
themselves are the backdrop rather than a building or river view.
For an elopement or micro wedding, an oak grove can keep everything simple. You can create a
ceremony that feels intentional without bringing in a huge amount of decor. The branches, Spanish
moss and filtered light do most of the visual work for us. Because it is a private event property,
couples should contact the Historic Bluffton Foundation directly for current availability and rental
details.
Best for: couples who want a tree-covered Lowcountry ceremony with a private-event feel.
6. Martin Family Park
Martin Family Park is a Town-owned green space on Boundary Street with an open lawn, benches,
picnic tables and restrooms. It is simple, but that can be exactly what an elopement needs.
I would consider this park for a couple who wants a small ceremony in Old Town without building
the entire day around one famous landmark. The Town rents the park for events, and like its other
public parks, a permitted event does not close the park to everyone else. Photographing here
would be less about staying inside the park for the entire session and more about using it as the
ceremony point before exploring nearby Old Town.
Best for: minimalist ceremonies, small groups and couples who want an Old Town starting point
without a formal venue.
7. New Riverside Barn
New Riverside Barn is one of Bluffton's newest Town-owned event spaces. It opened for rentals in
2026 and was designed for weddings, reunions and other private events. The barn includes an
enclosed air-conditioned space, caterer's kitchen, dressing room, courtyard, firepit, patio,
restrooms, tables and chairs.
This is the practical choice on the list. You get a Lowcountry-inspired venue without putting the
entire day at the mercy of heat or rain, and there are indoor and outdoor areas that can give the
photographs variety. It makes more sense for a micro wedding or elopement with guests than for
two people who only need a five-minute ceremony, but it is worth knowing about if you want one
place that can handle everything.
Best for: micro weddings, family-inclusive elopements and couples who want a real weather
backup and reception space.
8. New Riverside Event Lawn & Music Pavilion
Right beside New Riverside Barn, the Town also rents the New Riverside Event Lawn and Music
Pavilion. The outdoor space includes a large lawn, walking path, restrooms and accessible power,
giving couples another option if they want a more open-air ceremony.
I would look at this for a slightly larger elopement or micro wedding where you want room for
chairs and a simple outdoor setup but do not necessarily need a formal ballroom. Because the lawn
is part of a public park area, current Town rules and rental conditions should be reviewed before
planning decor, tents or other equipment.
Best for: open-air ceremonies, casual micro weddings and couples who want more setup space
than a small Old Town park.
9. Venue 1223
Venue 1223 is a private event space in Old Town Bluffton, only a couple of minutes from the May
River. It hosts ceremonies, receptions and rehearsal dinners and gives couples a more controlled
indoor setting while keeping the Historic District close by.
This can be a really smart option when you want Old Town photographs but do not want to gamble
on the weather for the actual ceremony. We can photograph getting-ready details and the
ceremony indoors, then step outside and use Calhoun Street, the May River area or nearby historic
blocks for portraits.
Best for: intimate indoor ceremonies, weather-conscious couples and elopements that still want
easy access to Old Town portraits.
10. Hewitt Oaks
Hewitt Oaks is a private Bluffton wedding venue set on 25 acres with mature live-oak groves and
lakeside views. It is much more of a full-service venue than a simple courthouse-style elopement
location, but its trees and private setting make it one of the most beautiful ceremony options in the
Bluffton area.
The property offers multiple indoor and outdoor event spaces and only hosts one wedding per day
for its Signature Wedding clients. That level of privacy is the opposite of a public park. For
photography, the oak canopies, landscaped grounds and indoor backup spaces make it easy to
create a complete gallery without leaving the property. Couples should be aware that Hewitt Oaks
is an all-inclusive venue with minimum-spend requirements rather than a location-only rental.
Best for: couples who want privacy, full-service planning and a polished Lowcountry wedding
setting.
11. May River Chapel at Montage Palmetto Bluff
May River Chapel at Montage Palmetto Bluff is one of the area's most recognizable waterfront
ceremony spaces. The small chapel overlooks Lowcountry water and marsh, with arched windows
that keep the landscape visible even during an indoor ceremony.
For an intimate wedding, this gives you something special: the feeling of a traditional chapel
without giving up the river and marsh scenery that brought you to Bluffton in the first place. The
resort lists the chapel as a wedding venue and pairs it with nearby lawns, village spaces and the
River House for larger celebrations. Because Palmetto Bluff is a private resort community, access
and photography arrangements need to be coordinated through the venue.
Best for: elegant destination elopements, waterfront chapel ceremonies and couples who want a
full resort experience.
12. Somerset Chapel at Montage Palmetto Bluff
Somerset Chapel is the larger of Montage Palmetto Bluff's two chapel options. It has tall arched
windows and a more formal architectural presence, while still being surrounded by the
Lowcountry landscape of Palmetto Bluff.
I would choose Somerset over May River Chapel if the ceremony itself is meant to feel slightly
more formal or if you have a larger micro-wedding guest list. The windows create beautiful
directional light inside, and afterward the resort gives us a completely different set of outdoor
environments for portraits. As with all Montage wedding spaces, booking and access are handled
directly through the resort.
Best for: couples who want a refined chapel ceremony with room for more guests and access to
Palmetto Bluff portraits afterward.
Do You Need a Permit to Elope in a Bluffton Park?
If you want to hold an organized ceremony in a Town of Bluffton park, I would not assume that
simply showing up with a group, chairs or decorations is okay. The Town has an Events and
Venues department that handles facility rentals and special-event permits, and several of the parks
on this list can be formally reserved.
One detail couples should understand is that renting a Town park does not automatically make the
entire park private. The Town's current rules for facilities such as Oyster Factory Park and Martin
Family Park state that public access must remain available even during a paid, permitted event. In
other words, your reservation gives you permission to use the approved space for your event, but
it does not allow you to close the park to everyone else.
Rules also vary by property. Wright Family Park, for example, currently prohibits alcohol and
amplified music, while tents over certain sizes at Town facilities may require additional
permitting. Before sending invitations or ordering rentals, I would confirm the latest rules with
Bluffton's Events and Venues department for the specific location you want.
A Few Bluffton Elopement Planning Tips I Would Keep in Mind
Use the May River light to your advantage. Bluffton looks incredible late in the day when the light
warms up, especially around the river and marsh. If your ceremony location allows it, I would
build the timeline backward from the best portrait light rather than choosing a ceremony time
first.
Remember that Lowcountry weather is part of the plan. Summer can mean heat, humidity and
fast-moving afternoon storms. A private venue, chapel or indoor rental gives you more control,
while a public park keeps things simpler but leaves you more exposed to weather.
Do not underestimate walking. Old Town Bluffton is one of the reasons I like photographing here.
A ceremony at Wright Family Park, Heyward House or another Old Town location can turn into a
walking portrait session with historic homes, storefronts, live oaks and river views instead of
driving from one backdrop to another.
Think about privacy before choosing a public park. Bluffton's parks can be beautiful and
affordable, but they remain public spaces. If you want complete control over who is around during
the vows, a private venue may be worth the extra cost.
Keep the day small if that is what you actually want. Bluffton lends itself to intimate celebrations.
You can exchange vows, walk Old Town for photographs, and finish with dinner nearby without
building a traditional wedding timeline around the day.
Getting Your Marriage License for a Bluffton Elopement
Bluffton is in Beaufort County, and marriage licenses are issued through the Beaufort County
Probate Court.
The County currently requires both applicants to appear in person, and marriage-license
applications are handled by appointment. The Probate Court's current office information lists
marriage-license appointments at the Bluffton satellite office from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday, along with the Beaufort and Hilton Head Island offices.
South Carolina also has a 24-hour waiting period from the time you apply until the marriage
license can be issued, so this is not something I would leave until the morning of your ceremony.
Blood tests and physical exams are not required, and witnesses are not required for the ceremony.
The ceremony must take place in South Carolina, but it does not have to take place in the same
county where the license was issued. South Carolina notaries public are among the officials
authorized to perform marriage ceremonies.
Beaufort County currently lists marriage-license application fees based on residency: $50 if either
applicant resides in Beaufort County, $75 if neither lives in Beaufort County but at least one
applicant lives in South Carolina, and $95 if both applicants live outside South Carolina. The
County currently specifies exact cash for these fees. Because procedures and fees can change,
verify everything directly with Beaufort County Probate Court before your appointment.
What Is the Best Place to Elope in Bluffton?
If you want classic Old Town Bluffton with the May River close by, I would start with Wright
Family Park or Oyster Factory Park.
If history matters most, look at the Heyward House, the Colcock-Teel Oak Grove or ask the Church
of the Cross about its current wedding policies.
If you want privacy and a full-service venue, Hewitt Oaks gives you a completely different
experience from a public park.
If a waterfront chapel and destination-resort feel are what you have in mind, May River Chapel at
Palmetto Bluff is hard to beat, while Somerset Chapel gives you a slightly more formal option.
And if you simply want a weather-safe space in or near Old Town, Venue 1223 or New Riverside
Barn can make the logistics much easier.
The best Bluffton elopement does not have to be the most elaborate one. I would choose the place
that matches how you actually want the day to feel, then use the rest of Bluffton as part of the
photography experience afterward.
