Inside Flirt Lash Loft:
A Bluffton, SC Lash Studio Through My Camera
Some of my favorite photography projects happen when I get the opportunity to document people doing what they genuinely love.
This particular session was especially personal to me. Flirt Lash Loft is a local lash studio here in Bluffton, South Carolina, owned and operated by my girlfriend.
I've been able to watch her build the business, work with her clients and put an incredible amount of care into the details of what she does.
A while back, I brought my camera into the studio to document an actual lash session.
Rather than creating a collection of posed photographs, I wanted these images to show what happens behind the scenes: the concentration, precision and hands-on work that most people never really get to see.
And we're already planning another branding session as Flirt Lash Loft continues to grow.
Photographing the Details Behind a Lash Appointment
Beauty businesses are interesting to photograph because so much of the work happens in the smallest details. During this session, I spent a lot of time photographing close. Very close. The lash tools, individual lashes, placement, hands working around the eyes and all of the little movements that happen throughout an appointment became part of the story. Those details are exactly what caught my attention as a photographer. When somebody looks at a finished set of lashes, they're seeing the final result. They aren't necessarily seeing all of the careful work that went into creating it. That's what I wanted these photographs to capture.
Showing More Than the Finished Result
One thing I've always believed about branding photography is that a business shouldn't only show the finished product.
People want to understand who they're working with and what the experience feels like.
For Flirt Lash Loft, that meant photographing more than beautiful lashes.
I wanted to capture the environment inside the studio, the interaction between lash artist and client, the tools being used and the overall experience of actually being there.
Images like these give potential clients a much better idea of what to expect before they ever make an appointment. And for a small local business, that visual connection can be incredibly valuable.
Branding Photography for a Bluffton Small Business
This session is also a good example of why I enjoy working with local businesses. Branding photography isn't necessarily about standing in front of a camera smiling. Sometimes the strongest branding photographs happen when someone almost forgets the camera is there.
They're working. They're concentrating. They're interacting with a customer.
They're doing the thing that actually makes their business special.
That's the kind of imagery I want when I'm photographing a business.
It's also something I'm incorporating more into my own photography work here in Bluffton and the
Savannah area.

What's Next for Flirt Lash Loft
This won't be the last time Flirt Lash Loft appears in front of my camera.
Since these photographs were taken, the business has continued to grow, and we're now planning another branding session that will include both the owner and the studio's new employee.
That gives us an opportunity to expand the visual story.
Instead of concentrating primarily on the lash process like I did during this shoot, the next session can include updated portraits, individual headshots, team photographs, working images, details of the studio and more lifestyle-oriented branding photographs.
It'll be fun to compare the new photographs with this original session and see how the business has evolved. And I'll probably turn that session into another blog post when we're finished.
Why I Photograph Local Businesses This Way
My photography background has always involved more than simply making something look good.
I've spent years working in professional commercial and marketing photography, so when I'm photographing a business, I'm also thinking about where those photographs are actually going to be used.
Website banners need different compositions than Instagram posts. A Google Business Profile might need something completely different from an About page.
Headshots serve a different purpose than behind-the-scenes photographs. The goal is to create a collection of images that gives the business options instead of delivering 50 versions of essentially the same photograph.
That will be an even bigger part of the next Flirt Lash Loft session.
Supporting Local Businesses in Bluffton
One of the things I enjoy about living and working around Bluffton is seeing how many businesses here are built by actual people in the community. Flirt Lash Loft happens to be particularly close to me, but it's also one of the reasons I enjoy documenting small businesses. There's a person behind the logo. There's a story behind the business. And there's usually a lot happening behind the scenes that customers never see. Photography gives us a way to show some of it.
